‘A’ is for Ava
Dear Ava,
Today you are two weeks old. I can remember just three weeks ago when you were still in my tummy kicking and hiccupping. I carried you inside of me for almost ten months and now that you have made it out into the world, I feel blessed and am amazed everyday at the miracle that is you. You have been an absolute joy to me and your father and I am not ashamed to admit that we often times spend hours in the evening just staring at you. Some can say I am biased because I am your mother, but you my dear, are a beautiful, beautiful baby…perfect in every way. You have the tiniest little fingers and toes and have an iron grip that surpasses other newborns I have held.

I see your dad in you when you are sound asleep, and see a bit of myself when you are awake - you have my eyes and your dad’s lips and chin.

Parent often times wonder what their baby will look like, and you my dear Ava, are every bit as smooshy-cheeked and delicious as I dreamed you would be. Just like the scent of a new car, you have that sweet newborn smell that your father and I just can’t get enough of.

Although you are only fourteen days old, you already have a distinct personality of your own. You are strong willed and determined and fight to do what you please despite the fact that we are a hundred times bigger and stronger than you. You kick with surprising strength (making diaper changes a challenge), you have a strong grasp and hold my hand with unyielding force (I love this when you are eating and want to hold my hand), and you cry with a purpose (when you are hungry, tired, or need to be changed). You love touching your cheeks with your hands, and I often times find you sleeping with your right arm over your eyes.

It’s with this incredible strength and toughness that your father and I choose your name, Ava. After much discussion, we narrowed your name to either be Ava, Chole, or Kyla; we couldn’t decide immediately, so you were actually nameless for the first 24 hours! You were still our ‘babymo’ and we didn’t know what name to give you that would stick for the rest of your life. After watching and observing you, we knew you were an Ava – unique, feminine, strong, and glamorous. Chloe was an equally beautiful name, but too soft for a girl so strong and determined; Kyla, seemed too ordinary and trendy after I saw you smile within the first 24 hours of life and have such a distinct personality of your own already.
From the day you were born, I can see you “processing” everything around you. Even though you can’t quite communicate to us (crying doesn’t count!), I can see depth in your soulful and inquisitive eyes and know that you are completely aware of everything around you.

You also seem to become quite frustrated because you bore easily from all the normal “baby” things. But rest assure, your dad is grooming you like a Chinese gymnast and making sure you are strong, balanced, and physically fit! And something must be going right since you have a strong neck (I swear you were able to hold it up from the beginning) and core to sit up and observe the world.

And speaking of personality, though you are just a baby, you are becoming quite the little person with your own likes and preferences. You have a cute little girly squeal that had your dad wondering if boy babies also make the same sound since it is very feminine! You squeak and mewl like a little kitten, that we’ve often times thought that Oliver or Mocha were making those sweet little noises at first before we noticed it was you!
And as far as newborn personalities go, you are definitely taking after your dear mother with great punctuality, organization, and cleanliness. You love to be clean (I don’t blame you, who would want to sit around in a poopy diaper…!), you love to eat and sleep, and most of all, you have an internal clock that would give even the most accurate watch a run for its money. You go to sleep and get up – to the tee – every two hours. Your father and I joked that it was a strange coincidence at first, but fourteen days and a thousand naps and feedings later, we realize that you are the perfect human timer. As often as I stare at you, I swear that you are growing before my eyes and getting bigger and stronger every day. Your precious little face changes by the hour and I see bits of your Aunty Lori, me, your father, and even your great Korean grandmother in you.
Ava, you are the light of our life and I can’t wait to grow and learn with you as you get older. We wonder if you’ll be musical, artistic, interested in dancing or following in your dad’s footsteps in the world of science. Whatever you choose, we will support and love you and are so excited to embark on this journey called life with you. You are and will always be our baby and we’re so glad you’re finally here; only fourteen days in and you’ve already enriched our lives beyond our wildest dreams.

Love Always,
Your Adoring Momma
